The formulas we use

CGPA → Percentage

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

Example: a CGPA of 8.2 = 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. Each subject's grade point can be converted the same way.

Percentage → CGPA

CGPA = Percentage ÷ 9.5

Example: 76% ÷ 9.5 = a CGPA of 8.0. Divide by your custom factor if you're not on the CBSE scale.

The ×9.5 multiplier is a CBSE convention and gives an indicative percentage, not an exact mark. Universities on a 10-point scale often differ — VTU commonly uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 and Anna University has its own formula, so use the custom option and always confirm with your institution's official rule before relying on the number.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage? ▼
Multiply your CGPA by a board-specific multiplier. For CBSE the formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. So a CGPA of 8.2 becomes 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. This tool applies the multiplier for you and also works in reverse, turning a percentage back into a CGPA.
Why does CBSE use a multiplier of 9.5? ▼
CBSE analysed the marks of high-scoring students over several years and found that, on average, the marks in five main subjects worked out to about 9.5 times the grade point. So they fixed a single conversion factor: multiply the CGPA (or a subject's grade point) by 9.5 to get an indicative percentage. It is an approximation, not an exact mark, which is why the result is called an indicative equivalent.
How do I convert a percentage back into CGPA? ▼

Do VTU and Anna University use the ×9.5 formula? ▼
No. The ×9.5 rule is specific to CBSE (and many CBSE-affiliated schools). Universities on a 10-point CGPA scale often use different formulas — for example VTU commonly uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, while Anna University uses its own conversion. Always check your university's official rule; use the Custom multiplier option here only when your institution genuinely multiplies by a fixed factor.
