About the Tip Calculator

This tip calculator takes the guesswork out of paying the bill. Enter the check amount, choose a tip percentage — either a common preset or your own custom rate — and it instantly shows the tip, the grand total, and, when you're dining as a group, exactly what each person owes. It works with a range of currencies and can round the numbers up so paying in cash is painless.

  • Use the presets for a quick, sensible tip, or type a custom percentage for full control.
  • Splitting a group bill? Set the number of people to see each share of the total and the tip.
  • Choose “round per person” when everyone pays their own way and you want clean, cash-friendly amounts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip?
It depends on where you are and the service. In the US, 15–20% is customary for sit-down restaurants, with 18% a common default. In many other countries a smaller tip (5–10%) or none at all is normal, since service is often included. Use the preset buttons as a starting point and adjust with a custom percentage.
Is the tip calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
This calculator applies the tip percentage to whatever bill figure you enter. If you'd like to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter the subtotal; if you prefer to tip on the full post-tax total, enter that instead. Both are common conventions.
How does splitting the bill work?
Set the number of people and the calculator divides the grand total (bill plus tip) evenly, showing the amount each person owes and each person's share of the tip. It always keeps at least one person so the maths stays valid.
What does 'round up' do?
Rounding makes the final numbers tidy for cash. Round total rounds the grand total up to the next whole currency unit and recalculates the tip to match. Round per person rounds each person's share up to the next whole unit — handy when everyone pays their own way — so the total collected covers the bill with a little extra tip.
Which currencies are supported?
You can pick from a range of common currencies including US dollar, euro, pound, yen, rupee and more. The calculator formats every amount with the right symbol and decimal places (for example, yen shows no decimals). The tip maths is identical regardless of currency.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser using plain JavaScript. Your bill amounts never leave your device and nothing is uploaded or stored.
