About this tool

PDF to Text lifts the words out of a PDF and gives them back to you as plain, editable text — no formatting, no images, just the content you can copy, paste, or save. It’s perfect for quoting a report, pulling notes out of a document, or feeding text into another app.

It works with text-based PDFs — the kind created by Word, Google Docs, a browser’s “Print to PDF”, or most export tools. If your PDF is really a scan or a photo of a page, there’s no text layer to read, so nothing will come out. In that case use our OCR PDF tool, which recognises the letters in the image itself.

Big document? No problem. We read one page at a time and show a live progress bar, and you can cancel at any point — the page stays responsive the whole way through.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which PDFs can I pull text out of?
Any PDF that already contains real, selectable text. If your PDF is a scan or a photo of a page, there's no text to read — use our OCR tool instead, which recognises text inside images.
Will the layout and formatting be kept?
No. You get plain, copyable text — columns, tables and fonts aren't preserved. That's ideal for reusing the words, but not for recreating the original look.
What are the page markers?
An optional --- Page N --- line inserted between pages so you can see where each one starts. You can turn it off if you'd rather have one continuous block of text.
How do I get the text out?
Copy it with one tap, or download it as a plain .txt file you can open in any editor.
Why is some text missing or jumbled?
A few PDFs store text in an unusual way, so the order can come out oddly. Give the result a quick read, especially for documents with heavy columns or graphics.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs entirely in your browser on your own device. Your file is never uploaded and we never see it.
