About the PAN Validator

The Permanent Account Number is India's core tax identifier — a 10-character code in the shape ABCPD1234E (five letters, four digits, one letter). This tool checks that a PAN is put together correctly and reads back the meaningful parts: the fourth letter tells you the kind of holder (an individual, a company, a trust and so on), while the fifth letter is normally the first letter of the surname or the entity's name.

A structural check like this is handy when you are keying PANs into a form, cleaning up a spreadsheet, or catching typos before you submit a return — but it cannot tell you whether a PAN is actually registered. Everything happens on your device: nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe to check even sensitive numbers.

How it works

The card shows a green tick or red cross instantly, with a plain-English reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a PAN?
PAN (Permanent Account Number) is a 10-character alphanumeric ID issued by the Indian Income Tax Department. It uniquely identifies a taxpayer and is needed for filing returns, opening bank accounts, and most high-value transactions.
What does a valid PAN look like?
A PAN is 5 letters, then 4 digits, then 1 letter — for example ABCPD1234E. The fourth letter marks the type of holder (individual, company, trust, and so on), and the fifth letter is usually the first letter of the surname or entity name.
How does this checker decide if a PAN is valid?
It confirms the structure (5 letters, 4 digits, 1 letter) and that the fourth character is a recognised holder-type code. A PAN has no public check digit, so this is a structural check, not a lookup against the tax database — it cannot confirm the PAN actually belongs to a real person.
Is my PAN sent anywhere?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser. Your PAN never leaves your device, is never uploaded, and is not stored anywhere.
Can a PAN pass the format check but still be fake?
Yes. This tool tells you whether a PAN is well-formed, not whether it is registered. Only the Income Tax Department can confirm a PAN is genuine and belongs to a given taxpayer.
