What is HRA?

House Rent Allowance (HRA) is a component of a salaried individual's income that helps them get tax exemptions for rent paid. It is available only if the individual lives in rented accommodation.

How is HRA Calculated?

As per income tax rules, the least of the following three is exempt from tax:

  • Actual HRA received
  • 50% of basic salary (for metro cities), 40% for non-metros
  • Rent paid minus 10% of basic salary

Eligibility for HRA Exemption

  • You must be a salaried individual receiving HRA
  • You must live in a rented house
  • Rent receipts or rental agreement may be needed for proof

Can You Claim HRA Without Rent Receipts?

For HRA claims exceeding ₹3,000/month, rent receipts are typically required by employers. However, if not submitted, you may still claim it while filing your ITR directly — provided you're able to justify the rent paid.
